The result eases the pressure on Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the team suffered three consecutive league losses.
Spurs climb to eighth place in the standings while Villa drop to 10th place.
“We needed a win but a well-deserved win. We had a good game against tough opponents. Important to us boys and fans. We responded well after conceding and positive in many ways “Nuno said.
“Several times we have conceded and gone flat, but this time the team did well. We missed chances to kill the game.”
Harry Kane almost opened the scoring from inside his own half after 23 minutes, but his long-distance free kick was held back by Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez.
The hosts took the lead four minutes later as Son Heung-Min prepared Hojbjerg to score with a composed finish.
After the break, Spurs had chances to double their lead, but Tyrone Mings cleared Emerson’s header off the line before Ezri Konsa blocked Son’s point-blank effort.
Villa made Spurs regret the missed opportunities and equalized after 68 minutes when Watkins converted Targett’s cross.
However, Spurs came back in front three minutes later, Son provided another assist as Targett bagged the ball into his own net.
Kane, who scored a hat trick against NS Mura in the Europa Conference League in midweek, had chances to kill the game but was unusually hesitant and the scoreless England striker’s six-game streak in the Premier League is his worst streak since 2015- 16 campaign.
“I didn’t think there was a lot going on in the game,” Villa boss Dean Smith said. “They had the exceptional player on the pitch at Son Heung-Min, he prepared the winner and got us into trouble the whole game.”
