A group of UCL scientists recently discovered a whole new way to transfer data through fiber optic cables, reaching record breaking broadband speeds in the process.
The new method, which has reached unheard-of speeds of 178 Tbps (yes, that’s terabits per second), could in theory allow the download of 222 Ultra HD Blu-rays per second – an incomprehensible number compared to the lowest speeds. faster consumers. used today.
While for now this is only possible in a lab controlled environment, its creators intend to make this speed available to backhaul networks, businesses and eventually the public.
How it works?
Scientists at UCL, led by Dr Lidia Galdino, made this possible by using newly modified amplifiers to expand the range of colors that data could pass through in a 25 mile-long fiber-optic cable circling around of the laboratory.
Fiber optic cables transmit data by pulses of light (hence the term “ optical ”), so the speed they are already transmitting cannot be physically faster as they are already moving around the world. speed of light. However, by expanding the color spectrum of light which hosts more data can fit in at a time, and therefore more of it can be transferred in a given period of time.
