New debit card has a nifty trick to stop thieves spending your money


The contactless card limit was raised at the end of last year, allowing consumers to pay for goods up to £100 without needing additional security. It certainly makes things much faster when doing the weekly grocery shopping at the supermarket, but having such a high limit has raised a lot of concerns.

As you may know, when using a contactless card, all you have to do is press the reader on the cash register and a payment is made instantly without having to enter a PIN or sign a receipt for the store checked.

It’s easy to see how the hassle-free system could be abused if someone gets their hands on a credit or debit card, as £100 can be spent without proving it’s actually yours.

Luckily, it looks like Samsung could have come up with a nifty solution to make shopping on the high street much safer.

The tech giant has just unveiled a new kind of card that has a fingerprint sensor built right into the plastic.

This means that the card will not work until the owner places their thumb over the scanner and a biometric match is made.

It’s a lot like the systems already used by services like Apple Pay and Google Pay which use the security systems built into smartphones – like facial recognition – to ensure that payments can’t be made without them. permission of the bank account holder.

Samsung claims that with its new in-card security sensor, biometric payments will be faster and more secure when shopping. Biometric authentication removes the need to enter a PIN on a keypad and also prevents fraudulent transactions made with lost or stolen cards as it verifies the identity of the cardholder using a unique fingerprint and securely stored.

It’s unclear whether this technology could offer even higher limits than standard contactless cards, but it would make sense, especially as Apple Pay already allows users to make purchases over £100.

“The S3B512C combines a fingerprint sensor, secure element (SE) and secure processor, adding an extra layer of authentication and security in payment cards,” said Kenny Han, vice president of system marketing. It’s unclear when these cards might start to be made available by banks, but hopefully it won’t be too long until contactless payments feel a bit more secure.
