Air travel and seemingly benign everyday activities produce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Building on the simplicity of IMPACT, investors can now use the carbon offset tool to choose among greenhouse gas emitting activities related to households, transport and food, or enter a specific amount of carbon to be offset in dollars or tonnes. Interactive Brokers transparently sources and withdraws carbon credits from the appropriate agencies, enabling investors to fully or partially reduce their carbon footprint, while meeting broader sustainability goals.

For example, a customer planning to travel from New York to Hong Kong can tap on the “Offset Your Carbon” banner on the IMPACT app homepage and swipe up to review offsets by category. The customer can then select the flight time in hours and purchase the carbon offsets to have a positive impact on the planet. Additionally, the tool reports the number of tonnes of carbon neutralized both in the app and on account statements, allowing customers to track their progress towards reducing their carbon footprint.

“Sustainability and environmental awareness are not isolated aspects, they speak of a collective culture. A culture aware of the interconnected nature of our global community. As a result, we continue to develop products that serve this collective culture,” said Will Peterffy, ESG Director at Interactive Brokers. “Carbon Offsets makes it easy for our clients to participate in the emerging collective culture dedicated to protecting our planet while investing in companies that are more aligned with their values through the IMPACT app.”

Interactive Brokers has worked with Sustain.Life to provide emissions data for each carbon-emitting activity available in the app. Sustain.Life’s SaaS platform helps companies across all industries reduce their environmental impact by providing ESG tools that help measure and manage their carbon emissions. The Carbon Offsets tool is available in the IMPACT app for IB LLC customers.
