Newly Appointed Ornellas to Lead Conscious Travel Initiatives in Coordination with Kaua’i Destination Management Action Plan
LĪHUE, KAUA’I – October 26, 2021 – The Kaua’i Visitors Bureau (KVB) announces Patricia “Patti” Ornellas as the organization’s Destination Director. In this newly created position funded by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority (HTA), Ornellas will lead efforts to implement and execute the goals and vision of Kaua’i’s Destination Management Action Plan (DMAP), in emphasizing the perpetuation of Kaua’i as a destination focused on regenerative tourism and conscious travel.
“As the Kaua’i travel industry continues to rebound from the unprecedented events of 2020, now is the time to reconnect and align the visitor industry with the values of our island community,” said Sue Kanoho, Executive Director of the Kaua’i Visitors Bureau. “Patti will play a vital role in this process as we continue to encourage our visitors to travel pono, to preserve Kaua’i’s natural beauty, and to maintain the health and well-being of its people and culture through ongoing programs and initiatives. “
Ornellas has spent 15 years in the hospitality industry taking on a variety of roles including hospitality operations and owner assistance. While in these roles, his responsibilities also included managing rooms and revenue, working with travel wholesalers, and handling owner and guest concerns. Most recently, Ornellas has spent the past seven years as the American Cancer Society (ACS) Development Manager for the local Kaua’i office. At ACS, Ornellas focused on fundraising activities, events and grants on the island, and collectively raised $ 1.89 million for the ACS mission, helping to continue supporting the programs and services for cancer patients.
“When the opportunity arose to be a part of KVB, I thought, ‘What better way to continue my efforts and past experiences. I could actually be part of an organization to help make a difference within my island community… my home, ”Ornellas said. “I feel blessed, honored and excited to join the Kaua’i Visitors Bureau and look forward to starting to engage with our community.”
Ornellas holds a BA in Communication from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa with a specialization in Public Relations. In her spare time, she is a hula dancer and professional makeup artist.
“Patti’s community involvement and outreach experience will be essential to give Kaua’i residents a greater voice in tourism and implement DMAP actions, the majority of which are well advanced,” said Caroline Anderson , Planning Director of HTA. “Her efforts will support Mālama Ku’u Home’s overall HTA mission (take care of my beloved home) for the betterment of our community.”
The Kaua’i DMAP is a three-year plan (2021-2023) whose objective is to rebuild, redefine and reorient tourism. A 21-member steering committee representing members of the community, the tourism industry and other sectors developed measures to improve the visitor experience, create positive economic and quality of life contributions for visitors. residents of Kaua’i, to preserve the culture of Kaua’i and protect its lands and natural resources.
