Das Boot Submarine Epic Gets TV Series Sequel
The original 1981 film followed the story of a group of men serving on a German submarine during World War II. Based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s book, it featured a strained, claustrophobic look at one side of warfare that we don’t often get on this side of the pond.
Interestingly, the new series won’t be a case of ‘das Reboot’, but will pick up right at the end of the film, although there has been no word on the return of the original cast or director. . In addition to providing the German perspective, the series will also look at the experiences of the French Resistance and Allied forces.
It is written by Tony Saint and Johannes W Betz and produced by Bavaria Films and Sky Deutschland. Christian Franckenstein, CEO of Bavaria Films, explained why now is the time to do it:
“Today, more than ever, anti-war stories need to be told,” he said. “The notions of war and terror are omnipresent. The misguided actions of young men driven to commit acts of terror by false ideologies are evident …
“The 1981 film Das Boot is unique and we approach our work with the utmost respect for this masterpiece. We want to build on the strong brand of Das Boot and continue to tell the story in a contemporary way. using every cinematic achievement and the storytelling technique we have today. “
Das Boot will air in 2018. It’s unclear if and when it’ll be on UK TV – it’s still a long way off after all – but given that it’s a Sky production, it seems very likely that we will get it at about the same time.
