A year of multidirectional progress for IIT Guwahati


Effectively overcoming the challenges posed by the pandemic and adjusting to the new normal, the Guwahati Indian Institute of Technology has shown multifaceted progress in 2021.

Breakthrough in research and innovation, launch of new schools and major centers as well as courses in line with the new education policy, addition of new infrastructure, collaboration with universities and industry, maintenance of a high place in NIRF and QS rankings, and record- high internships, major outreach programs, working closely with state government and the northeast region, IIT has made progress in all areas.

Research and innovation

– Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed technology to provide drinking water free of iron, arsenic, fluoride and other contaminants to rural populations in Assam using their various prototype units and innovative technology . Several of these units are being installed in Assam and other northeastern states.

-IIT Guwahati invented the low cost biodegradable composite wound dressing film.

This material, based on the integration of a synthetic polymer, is non-toxic in nature and creates a humid environment that would allow the body to heal itself through endogenous enzymes, according to recent research. Laboratory scale development has been found to be at least 50 percent economical compared to similar commercial materials.

-IIT Guwahati researchers reported new behavior of electrons in a conductor. The study is expected to lead to exciting results in the future and will have implications in several technologies. This will open up a new avenue of research in the direction of understanding the conductive properties of electrons.

–IIT Guwahati researchers have made fundamental contributions to memory architectures by preventing redundancy of data values ​​and improving slow and frequent writes in multicore processor systems

– Researchers at IIT Guwahati developed a ‘superhydrophobic thick nanoscale coating’ material to modify ordinary cloth or silk masks that retain their comfort but offer better protection against infections caused by aerosols such as COVID-19 .

– A group of researchers from IIT Guwahati have successfully developed hydrogel-based electrodes that could improve the performance of an energy storage device.

– As a very innovative solution to face the environmental crisis, IIT Guwahati researchers developed a new highly porous and hydrophobic superhydrophobic cotton composite material containing a metal-organic structure (MOF), which can absorb oil selectively from the oil-water mixture.

– Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed a new water-repellent material that can be used for real-time monitoring of human movements. The material developed is flexible, non-stretchable and environmentally friendly, capable of detecting low stresses with high sensitivity.

– Researchers at IIT Guwahati have successfully developed new materials that can use sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. These materials are much cheaper than the “noble metals” currently in use and could lead to cost-effective solar-powered hydrogen generators.

– Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed perovskite-based hybrid solar or photovoltaic devices to generate electricity from sunlight, which are highly efficient, cost-effective, easy to manufacture and easily recyclable.

New infrastructures

– The Honorable Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated a new “Center for Disaster Research and Management” (CDMR) at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati.

–In September 2021, IIT Guwahati launched the Center for Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CICPS), aimed at developing indigenous technologies. The Center aims to develop a minimum of five technologies per year.

–In November 2021, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Honorable Minister of Education, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, visited IIT Guwahati and inaugurated the state-of-the-art Nanotechnology Center (CNT) building and the Center for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) as well as two foci at the Institute. CIKS has also launched a course on the Assamese language spoken on campus.

–In November 2021, General (Dr) VK Singh (retd), the Honorable Minister of State for Civil Aviation in the Government of India, inaugurated India’s first university center for drone technology, the Center for the Development of skills and drone airport at IIT Guwahati. Called “AHOM Droneports”, it will be used to support cargo drones delivering urgent / medical and emergency / valuable supplies to remote areas in the northeast.

–Construction of a 1000-bed hostel was completed this year. In addition, several other infrastructure projects such as a research park, the expansion of academic complexes, an EWS hostel for female students, the increase in HVAC facilities are underway as well as the extension of other blocks. major academic.

-With the support of the Honorable Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma ji, the State Cabinet approved the establishment of a medical school and a super-specialized hospital at IIT Guwahati .

OPP and placement

-The Institute’s students received up to 179 PPOs in the 2021-22 academic year, which was the highest in the past three years.

-IIT Guwahati sets a new all-time high in all investment fronts. The phase 1 placement is still ongoing. So far, a total of 843 IITG students have been placed. Last year around this time, a total of 610 students were placed. So far, students have received 5 offers (including one international offer) over 1 crore.


-IIT Guwahati has maintained its position in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) by achieving a 07 ranking in the “Engineering” category this year and 08 ranking in India in the “Global” category of the NIRF 2021.

-IIT Guwahati was ranked at the global rank of 41 in the Research Citations category while increasing to 395 in the QS World Rankings. The institute was also ranked in the top 51-100 in the Petroleum Engineering category while also being ranked high in 10 other subject categories internationally.

Launch of new courses

– Academic activities in five new schools and four new centers at IIT Guwahati have been launched, which include bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs.

–In October 2021, IIT Guwahati launched a new B.Tech program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, IIT Guwahati launched its business school for various MBA courses.


–First batch of International Joint M.Tech. Indian and Japanese students graduated from IIT Guwahati-Gifu University in 2020-21. As of 2019, this program is the only such degree in India that allows a registered student to receive an international M.Tech. diploma with a mutual participation program.

-IIT Guwahati and Mizoram University have collaborated to jointly develop educational programs and foster R&D activities in addition to promoting student exchange.

–In September 2021, IIT Guwahati collaborated with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in the implementation of the AICTE-GAINER (Grant for Augmenting Infrastructure in North-East Region) program. Under this program, financial support is provided to technical institutions in the North East to help solve water and energy problems.

-IIT Guwahati has collaborated with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (AVV), a reputable private university based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, in education and research activities. This will help enrich the academic programs and promote the exchange of students between two institutions.

-IIT Guwahati collaborated with Oil India Ltd. to develop new technologies for energy and related sectors and focus on transfer of existing technologies, upgrading of knowledge, innovation partnership, training and skills development

– IIT Guwahati and the Brahmaputra Board of Trustees have teamed up to resolve river issues and also to use rivers more efficiently for the benefit of the people. The collaboration should help evolve with innovative technology that will contribute to better management of rivers like the Brahmaputra.

-IIT Guwahati is working closely with the Assam State government on several projects related to health sectors, infrastructure development, improvement of science education in the northeast region, communications, water resources and management, application of drone technology to various sectors, agriculture, COVID management, vaccine delivery, etc.

Technology transfers

A multitude of technology transfers have also been executed with various industries and organizations related to energy conservation, water purification and sensor technologies. IIT Guwahati also filed 81 patents during this period.

Faculty recruitment

During this period regular members (40) and international visitors / honorary professors (44) were hired. A special recruitment drive for SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS / PwD for faculty positions at IIT Guwahati was also recently announced.

Research funding

Major research funding has been provided to IIT Guwahati to various faculty members, centers and departments over the past year.
